Pre-presentation post- Online Support Groups
Some questions:
1. Do you think online support groups can be as effective for members as a traditional support group? What is gained or lost when support groups move online?
2. "Communication creates, re-creates and maintains community on online discussion forums through the continued interaction of participating members. However, the technological ability to communicate does not in itself create the conditions of community. Community depends not only upon communication and shared interests, but also upon "communion"... the 'human' feeling that comes from the communicative coordination of oneself with others and the environment." -Nessim Watson
How do you think online support groups create "communion" ?
3. Do you think certain types of support groups are more beneficial as online resources rather than physical face-to-face meetings? What types and why?
4. Full disclosure of opinions and personal stories creates very open communication. In a support group, exposing such information can also lead to opening oneself to peers' criticism. Do you think this is a positive or negative aspect of online support groups?
