Practicum #7 - Jordan
While I have incorporated Reddit, and Digg to some extent into my daily internet routine, I still find it very hard to interact with and contribute to both websites. Frankly, I don't think I fit the mold of either website. I've never been one to spout my opinions and views without discretion, nor have I ever been one to be ahead of the curve with technology. The top submissions on Reddit and Digg typically feature users who exude these qualities. Discussions are easy to contribute to, especially on Reddit, but getting a response is harder than it seems. Reddit's discussion are either a battle of wits among thousands of participants, of which I fail to stand out, or more serious discussions in which people contribute their two cents. For a lot the latter, I simply don't have real-life experiences that to allow me to contribute. Whether it's something regarding a job, car, or anything else related to life outside of college, I simply don't have anything to contribute. Submissions are an even bigger challenge. On Digg, not many submissions get noticed in the first place. But on Reddit, besides links to websites, the only way to get noticed is to submit a good or funny picture. Sadly, I don't have a camera right now, and I have no photo editing software with which to make my own picture. In all honesty though, I just don't think I fit the Reddit mold when it comes to contributing content. I personally don't enjoy sharing personal information with complete strangers over the internet, nor do I find it terribly enjoyable holding conversations with people I don't know either. I think the key to Reddit is that the people truly want to share their world with other people online. For example, when something happens to me in real life, my first instinct is to tell my friends, not to post about it on Reddit.

My practicum assignment was to join an online support group (I chose vegetarianism) and I also have little desire to update my "peers" when something significant happens in my life. There are so many hidden online communities out there that mean nothing to me or you, but to active users they really are a significant part of their lives. I can only guess that many of these users don't have real life outlets or relationships through which they can express their thoughts and ideas. Or perhaps they have difficulty connecting with people of similar unique interests.
