Practicum #4 Online Support Groups

One feature of my vegetarian support group is a daily newsletter which is sent to my email address. Instead of getting constant email reminders about messages, "hugs" and responses, DailyStrength sends a compiled newsletter each day listing hot discussion topics, most active members, and articles written by a panel of experts. It also notifies me if my discussion topic gets a response or if someone sends me a "hug". A hug is like a poke on facebook-- just an informal way to say hello. I like this more streamlined way of updates because it does not flood my email like facebook does. However, it is easy for me to skip it over because the subject line is always DailyStrength Community Update for Month, Day, 2010.

At the bottom of the newsletter are links to DailyStrength.org including an option to write a journal entry, update my profile, and check messages. The top discussion topics always have a preview in the newsletter. Today's most popular discussion was posted by the group's most active user: "onetoomany". She is frustrated by a coworker who wears leather. I personally think she should join an animal rights group instead, so I'm going to respond to her post and suggest this.
