Gaming on Digg
I decided to focus in on the gaming section of Digg, to see how it relates to concepts we have learned in class and to compare it to Reddit's gaming section. The gaming discussion on Digg is dominated by non-casual gamers, evident by the large number of entries about games for "hard-core" gamers. Whereas Reddit views video games humorously and nostalgically, Digg has a no-nonsense, serious approach to gaming. Digg users are concerned with the latest "behind-the-scenes" news and rumors about new and upcoming games. For instance, one of the top stories was an article about Graeme Devine, a supposed "gaming guru," leaving iPhone. He had been making games for the iPhone, but he wanted to make his own games. Specifically, Devine wants to concentrate on making games that utilize "player space," as he feels that there is a lot of exploration to be done with the player space in gaming. Other entries focused on games for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, consoles that are associated with non-casual games. One specific game was Gran Turismo, a racing game that a casual player would not find enjoyable. There were also several posts on the MMORPG "World of Warcraft" in anticipation of the release of the new game in the series, "Cataclysm." Overall, Digg users seem to be a bit more tech savvy than Reddit users when it comes to the details of gaming, although Reddit users have a much more humorous and classical approach to gaming, which is easier for me to relate to.
