Last night, I was working on a powerpoint presentation and used my laptop almost all night.

To be honest, I don't think I am ever without technology. I always have my phone on me and days like yesterday, I was on my computer for the vast majority of the day. I think it's interesting how much things have changed since 20 years ago. I know some people really hate the idea of being constantly available but I have a hard time remembering the last time I haven't been. One great example of this is the way my mom contacts me. Because she never knows which technology to use, she normally uses multiple, so I will commonly receive a voicemail, text message, facebook message and then a chat when I go online. Not to mention when she wants to send something big, like an email. No matter what medium she chooses, I am almost always quickly reachable. Kind of scary, isn't it?

  1. It really is incredible how much technology has progressed within the past several years. It's easy to forget because we are so immersed in different forms of media. My mother also has trouble figuring out which types of technology to use when she wants to contact me. She has a blackberry and when she can't reach me by calling, she will send me an email from her blackberry rather than bbming or texting me. This works essentially the same way, and I still receive notification on my phone, but still strikes me as a bit odd. People our age would never send an email from their blackberries when looking for an instant response.

  2. I agree, I realized that all my breaks "away" from my computer screen are usually spent around a TV screen with my roommates or taking quick breaks to send texts. It's also interesting how parents contact their kids. I feel like people our age view communicating on Facebook and communicating via text message or cell phone as having different norms and purposes, whereas our parents view them as largely the same.

  3. It's funny- once my mother learned to text she started doing it all the time. She has a tendency to text me over and over instead of calling me when needing to discuss something that can't be resolved in one or two texts. Normally I would expect her to just call and avoid the texting, but sometimes I feel like she's a high schooler having too much fun texting her friends (her business partner constantly texts her - often multiple long messages at a time. I'm guessing that's where she learned it).
