YouTube & Hulu

On YouTube, I watched “Double Rainbow,” a popular video depicting a man marveling at a beautiful double rainbow at Yosemite National Park. Overall, the video was short (3:30) and extremely bad quality. Throughout the three minutes, the videographer constantly shook the camera as he moved through the woods to admire the double rainbow from various angles. Although I think this YouTube video is hilarious, the incessant jiggling of the camera is extremely agitating and unpleasant.

On Hulu, I watched a featured clip, “Under Attack” from Family Guy. Before the clip began, I had to watch a ten second advertisement about Citizen Schools. When the video finally began, I immediately realized the high-quality image. While the low-grade “Double Rainbow” video was grainy and shaky, the Family Guy clip was perfect – The picture resembled a television image. Moreover, on Hulu, when I moved my mouse across the time bar, I was able to see images that reflected that particular moment in the clip. On YouTube, however, the time bar merely indicated the video’s progression.

At the end of the Hulu clip, I was given the option to watch the video again, share the video, or embed the video. Additionally, I received three clip recommendations. However, I was also presented with yet another Citizen Schools advertisement. Thus, I think the main differences between YouTube and Hulu are the video quality and the presence of advertisements.
