Practicum 4

In my quest to find new things to do with the limited aris software i came upon a new application called the Bike Box. This application, now being tested in Brooklyn (where it was developed) and the surrounding boroughs. Essentially what bike box does, is guide the user through a bike tour of NYC pointing out landmarks and points of interest along the way, using the iPhone's gps. In addition, the user can choose to create their own bike tour while recording their own descriptions along the way, this user created tour can then be posted to the Aris universe and accessed by anyone looking for a new bike route in NYC. Obviously, i was not able to experience this app first hand but i think it is an intriguing application of the Aris engine and another demonstration of how Aris could be used for recreational purposes without making the user feel like they are on some "quest" that is really without prupose i.e. Dow Day or Steel. Once again, this shows that the strength of this Aris game engine is not in recreational gaming but in a more tour oriented way that guides people through a new environment, while pointing things out along the way.

  1. The bike tour throughout NYC is really interesting. I'm from there and see how that could be a really fun afternoon with friends if the path is well planned out. This kind of technology has the capability of exploding if only used for the attractive routes and fun facts are provided at each stop
