Practicum 6 Peter

Today I spent about an hour on Snabbo.com and Facebook. First on Snabbo.com I made a group for movies in the 50's that I enjoy. Being a film major, I already had some old time favorites so it is not a fake interest(this list includes 12 Angry Men, Vertigo, Rear Window, East of Eden, and Tokyo Story). Perhapse the greatest decade of film. I added some pictures of old movie posters from google, some from http://www.bernardherrmann.org/articles/misc/torncurtain/. I also started a discussion on what are peoples favorite Alfred Hitchcock film. Hopefully I will have some comments on it by this week, but it seems that people on Snabbo.com don't go on very often or socialize much which is disappointing.

After looking on Senior.com and some comments on Snabbo I found out that some of the elderly were getting into facebook to keep in touch with their grandkids. So the second thing I did was put a join a facebook group called grandparenting. In this group are elderly grandparents who want to talk about their experiences with their grandkids. One posts talked about how a lady babysat her grandkids and they played with Lincoln logs all afternoon. Usually in these posts you tell about an experience, then you end the message with a phrase exclaiming how much you love Grandparenting. Grandparenting is usually the word you choose to express it, and the word is always in bold. Other than that the usual facebook jargan appears like lol for laugh out loud, and ttyl for ttyl. Another norm is commenting on posts about how cute the kids sound and how you enjoy the same kinds of activities. After reading some posts and making one, I added a few grandparents as friends so I could talk to them about their experiences online.

I am finding it very interesting about how conservative seniors are online. They rarely say anything that will offend others and they put up the simplest innocent posts that don't reveal much about how they feel. Mosts posts deal with what they are doing rather than how. Even though they use the same site in Facebook, the messages the elderly leave or very different from the emotional, detailed posts younger people leave.

  1. Like the activity but do you think creating a group for 50s movie lovers might just attract younger people that are like yourself and appreciate old time cinema? I thought it was interesting how old the elderly are more conservative online, this could possibly be due to them not fully embracing the anonymity of the internet yet. Last, I'm just curious, were there any really ugly grand kids that were still called cute confirming the norm?
