Practicum 4 - Kim

Recently, I have been utilizing the Foursquare website everyday to observe my check-in progress and mayorships. While exploring the Foursquare website, I learned that Foursquare has numerous add-on applications that Foursquare users can download and play. These applications supposedly enhance the value of Foursquare. Now, Foursquare customers no longer only use Fourquare to check-in at different locations. Instead, Foursquare users can download interesting applications with various functions. Some examples of these applications include:

1) Fourcash – On Fourcash, you can check-in at a location, write down how much money you spent, take a picture of your receipt, and upload this information onto the Fourcash website. Then, Fourcash creates a colorful graph to display your spending habits. This application is a fun and free way to manage your money.

2) PocketCrowd – This application allows you to tell your friends where you WILL be, not just where you are at the current moment. On PocketCrowd, you can schedule future events and invite Foursquare friends to attend.

3) Devotee – This application allows you to earn free stuff at the venues you visit most. Every time you check-in at a specific location, you can earn coupons for a free drink or meal.

4) Singles for Foursquare – This application allows you to view and chat with single people who are checked-in at your current location.

5) Fiddme – This application is alocal guide to the restaurants and food venues in your current city.

6) MobZombies – This application turns your real human check-in activity into an interactive game. When you check into a location, groups of zombies start attacking you. You have to defeat the zombies using your touch screen to win.

I have yet to download any of these applications. I’m not sure which one would be the most useful for me. Also, most of these applications only work on the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. I have a Blackberry so many of the additional applications are incompatible with my mobile software. I’m hoping to find an application that works with my Blackberry – I’m interested to see how these applications work!

  2. To begin with I find the FourSquare application to be really interesting. It is crazy to me that people should know where you are at all times. So many people use it though so there must be something satisfying about it,i just have yet to discover what it is. I guess you are the one choosing to update people on your status, but in my mind why must everyone know?

Anyways the FourCash application specifically really caught my attention. It is really interesting to think about the possibilities that an application like so can do for you. Who would've ever thought an application on our phones would help us control or spending.
