First off I wanted to find articles from newspapers and magazines and try to find where the elderly were going online(if at all). One of the first websites I went to gave me good ideas of where to start ( http://seniorjournal.com/NEWS/SeniorStats/3-02-04SnrsOnline.htm ) It said that when surveyed 94% of seniors used the internet to stay in touch, 72% use the internet to see current news, 70% to research health info, and 52% were purchasing things online. This is a good start to find the elderly in places like New York Times or Facebook because most want to stay in touch or find the news( I know my grandma is on Facebook now).
I also found two surprising things when looking up things they do online. Recently there have been trends in Seniors dating online, and a push to get more Seniors online as baby boomers with wealth are starting to age, commercial websites want to get into that market. Lately I have been spending time on websites encouraging seniors to learn how to use the internet such as http://askbobrankin.com/senior_citizens_online.html or www.senior.com . These websites have tools for helping seniors learn and navigate their way around their computer and the web in general. These websites are very simple with a lot of text and a few pictures and tabs to help navigate the web page, nothing complicated or too fancy.
I have also been on a blog but so far no reply posts, and like the websites for the elderly, the blogs are very simple and non confrontational. Further into the course I would like to blog more, learn the ins and outs of the websites, and perhaps go on an elderly dating site ;)
