In the last couple weeks, the online gaming world has had some serious new developments. First, the most anticipated game of year was released, Call of Duty: Black Ops. Fortunately, my roommate waited in line at midnight the night of its release and we were one of the first to play the 1 player war game. When he signed in and started playing, people had already leveled up 20 times (because of the different time zones) and had mastered the levels. People are unhealthily obsessed with this game. The next day, hundreds of thousands of people were online playing all day. Pretty ridiculous.
The other technological development was the new Microsoft Kinect. This is by far the future of video games and in my opinion, blows the Wii out of the water. The Kinect does not use any sort of controller, but detects motions of the player. This will for sure revolutionize human-computer interaction and is extremely fun to play. The game allows the user to challenge friends online in a variety of different mini games. I was only able to experiment with one game, Kinect Adventure and had a blast playing it. No headset or controller is necessary as the game has a built in microphone. Additionally, the game is equipped with a camera that takes pictures of you while playing.
A couple questions to think about before I go into further depth about these two new products:
Do people engage in networked gaming with the intention of meeting people or for solely entertainment purposes?
In the upcoming years, will every new game have an online feature? Is playing alone not as exciting anymore?
How much of a threat do you think it is to release personal information through a gamer tag?
