Practicum - Hannah [Presentation Post]

I will be doing the Identity and Social Networking Practicum Presentation with Jana tomorrow! Jana will be presenting on Twitter and I will be presenting on creating a blog. I have made considerable progress in incorporating my blog into my daily cooking routine. However, I have not been able to incorporate my blog into the food-blogging community.

After doing some research of other food blogs I have been able to identify different elements of identity. Here's a list of blog elements that can establish a blogger's blogosphere identity: Blog title, blog topic, blogs they follow, background display, logo/picture, and blogger profile or 'about' page. Most bloggers are very open about their blog topic, many go as far as putting it right below their title. Most bloggers also don't pretend to be experts about the topic(s) they choose to blog about and are completely open to suggestions and comments. All blogs are subject to public view but most have very small audiences (including mine!) and they know who's reading their posts. Because bloggers know who is most likely reading their posts they generally cater their topics to their friends/audience. I really enjoy the comments I get from my friends about my blog...the hard part is getting them to post those comments to my blog instead of my Facebook!

My discussion questions focuses on social heirarchy in the blogosphere and amateur vs. 'professional' bloggers:
  • Should all bloggers strive to get ad sponsorship and become a publicly recognized blogger?
  • Is it important to have different levels of blogging?
  • Is there something unique about having blogs with small audiences?
