Tomorrow in discussion I will be presenting on Social Networking. Upon using the three new social networks: 43 things, linked in, and film affinity, I have come to realize how revolutionary Facebook and Twitter are. I have spent hours searching for different social networks to join that I found to be remotely interesting. In fact, most of the ones recommended on the practicum assignment sheet have gone out of business. Many of the social networks that are not as popular have become hidden in the shadows of the other sites, left without many innovative ideas. Social networking is meant to be a way to connect with others, yet it has taken a turn towards special interest groups. The number of users and connections that can be made is significantly less than those on Twitter and Facebook. After two and a half weeks of being on different social networks, the number of "friends" or connections I made is barely over 10! With more popular sites, people are able to connect with those whom they know and have met before as opposed to meeting people completely based on their internet relationship. It seems to be that many other social networking sites do not give off a safe vibe like is felt with the more popular sites. All of these have led me to conclude that creating a successful social networking site is extremely tough yet once it becomes popular, it is tough to beat.
My discussion question is are you a part of another social network other than Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, LiveJournal, Flickr, or Four Square? If so, what are they and what are your feelings on these in comparison to the networks listed above?
