I am presenting in discussion today on my experience with Special Interest Communities. My presentation partner is Jen, who is doing Media Fandom. Media fandom seems to be the largest subset of Special Interest communities.
I chose Cooking as the special interest to be in. People comment about food and recipes just as one does with celebrity gossip. Everyone has an opinion of a type of food or lifestyle (vegetarian, vegan etc) just as one would on a particular actor or star. People who choose to participate in a media fan blog are really interested in the subject and enjoy following celebrities - whether that is to give them credit or bash them. It is the same with food among cooking communities. Both try to relate people to one another with using a specific subject (a dish/celeb) under a broad topic that those specific people are interested in. My discussion question for tomorrow is: Are you an active member of a virtual community? What are the benefits of joining a special interest group?
