Practicum #1 - Jana Levinson

The topic that I have been assigned for the practicum project is Twitter. I had set up a Twitter account prior to being in this class, but this project encouraged me to get more deeply involved in the Twitter community. Before I get into how I began working on my project, I want to explain why I originally started using Twitter.

When I first heard about Twitter, I didn't get the point of what it was. To me, it seemed exactly like status updates on Facebook, which I thought were annoying to begin with. As the hype of Twitter grew bigger and bigger, I finally had to check out the website for myself. I found it to be more like a community rather than boring Facebook status updates. It was a place where people could not only share ideas and opinions, but also relay news and communicate with each other. I realized that it was more of a social networking website than I had previously thought and I created an account.

I started off working on my project by searching for new people to follow on Twitter. When I had originally created my account, I only followed people that I immediately new and I didn't tweet very often. After I was assigned this as my topic, I decided to follow more celebrities, news medias, and individuals that I thought were funny. I am now follow 106 people and have 61 followers. Additionally, I made an effort to tweet more often and interact with others that I both know and don't know. I originally started off making a goal to tweet once day, but my growing interest in Twitter as a community has lead me to tweet multiple times a day.
